Discord is one of the greatest voice-communication and group-chatting app out there. All you have to do is set up a server or join one to start communicating with your friends online. Joining servers is easy, but you can also set up one of your own after we teach you here how to make a Discord server of your own.
There are all types of servers on Discord, ranging from politics, writing, gaming, studying, and many other different types of communities. But, you’ll need your own server to get full use of the Discord services while having fun with your friends.
Making a Discord server is incredibly easy. You can do it on your desktop app, internet browser, or smartphone app. In this article, you’ll read the step-by-step process and explanation to set up a Discord server on different platforms. After making your server, you can invite your friends to it and start doing whatever you want to do together. Also, if you want, you can set the server public so more new people can find it easily.
How to Choose a Discord Server Name
The first step before creating anything is to decide on a name for it. The same goes for your very own EPIC Discord Server. Your server’s name is the first thing people will see when they look up for it or receive an invitation.
Once you’ve decided on the name of your server, you can customize it and make it even more attractive by using emoticons, kaomoji, or unique font. There are many different types of tools available that you can use to generate your text using unique fonts, such as the “Vaporwave Text Generator” and “Fancy Text Generator.”
These fancy text fonts are great for PC or Web users but might not work as well for smartphones. If you’re using Android or iOS, you can look up different font generator apps there and copy the text and paste it where you’d put the server’s name. You can also do this for emoticons and kaomoji, just copy it from Google or any other site and paste it on your server’s or channel’s name.
How to make a Discord server (on Windows and Mac)
Making a Discord server on Windows or Mac is easy. You can use the web browser or the desktop app to set it up in a matter of minutes. Just follow the step-by-step instructions given down below, and you’ll be able to make a server very easily. You’ll need a verified Discord account first.
Visit Discord’s official site: https://Discord.com/, if you’re using the web browser.
For web users, select the “Open Discord in your browser” option if you don’t have a Discord account yet. If you already have a Discord account, select the “login” option on the top right corner to sign in to your account. If you’re using the Desktop app, simply open it and log into it.
The web browser might ask you to enter your username and solve the reCAPTCHA challenge. It might ask you for additional verification.
Once you’re in, you can look at the left edge of the screen. You’ll see a “+” mark there. If you don’t see it, put your cursor on the left edge and scroll downwards, you’ll be able to find the “+” option there.
Now, it will give you several options to choose how your server should be. You can create your own from scratch or use some of the templates depending on for what purpose you’re making that group.
Select if you’re going to make the server for you and your friends, or you’re making it for a club or a community.
Discord will now ask you to customize your server by uploading an image and the server’s name. You can also enter a topic for your Discord server or skip it.
Select “Done,” and congratulations!! You now have a Discord server of your own.
You can now invite your friends to the server and have all the fun.
How to Make a Discord Server on Android
The process of setting up your Discord Server on Android is even easier than it is on a desktop app or web browser. Follow these easy step-by-step instructions:
Install the Discord App from Google Play Store.
Open Discord to create an account or log in to an existing one.
Now, look at the top left corner of the screen, and you’ll see an icon that looks like three horizontal lines piled over each other.
You’ll see a “+” icon there. Press it, and it will ask if you want to join a server or create one.
Select the “Create a server” option, and add an image and select the server’s name.
You’ll see a “Create Server” button. Once you press it, you’ll have your own Discord server.
You can also invite your friends through the link that will be displayed immediately after you finish creating the server. Press the “x” mark at the top-left corner of the screen to get past this screen and have a look at the server that you just created.
How to Make a Discord Server on iPhone
The process is mostly the same as it was for Android. Read the step-by-step instructions below to find out how easy it is to make a Discord server on your iPhone.
Download the app from “Apple App Store.”
Open the app and create an account. If you’re already a Discord user, you can choose to log in instead of creating a whole new account.
Once you’re in the app, look on the top-left corner of the screen to find the “three horizontal lines” icon and press it.
It will open a new menu, and here you’ll find the “+” icon. The server-making process will start as soon as you press this icon.
Select the “Create a server” option, enter your server’s name and image next and press the “Create Server” button.
It will show you a link next, which can be used to invite your friends to the server. Keep in mind that the link expires after 24 hours, and you’ll have to generate another one.
If you don’t want to invite any of your friends right now, you can press the “x” on the top-left corner of the screen. This will bring you to the server that you just created.
How to Customize Discord Server
Now that you’re done creating a server of your own, you’ll need to make some customizations to make it more attractive. You’ve already read about how you can put a fancy server name above, and now we’ll tell you a few other things that you can do.
One way to make your server more attractive is to add more relevant channels to it. We’ll show you how to create channels in detail later on. But, keep in mind that adding many channels will help you keep things organized. You can even create a music channel and let everyone else post their playlists, so your group members can get to know each other better by learning about other’s music tastes.
Adding bots is also a great idea to make your server more attractive. You can check out the following video about how to create a bot in your Discord server.
If you’re good at coding, you can make your bot do even more amazing stuff on the server.
You can also assign different roles to people to make it easier for everyone to manage the server. These roles can also be customized by adding different colors or names to them.
Suppose you don’t want to spend so much time customizing your Discord server. In that case, you can also use a server template to copy the important stuff from other channels. You’d still be able to make changes to them if you feel like improvising later. Keep in mind that you’ll only be able to copy a server’s channels, topics, roles, permissions, or other server settings. You won’t copy the other server’s name, image, messages, members, or other perks.
How to Invite Friends to your Discord Server
Inviting friends is very straightforward; you send them a link, and they can join through it. You can generate this link by following the steps shown below:
On the web or desktop app, all you have to do is click on “Invite your friends.” You can also do it on mobile by tapping the “Invite your friends” option on your server.
You can now select all the friends that you want to invite. If you want to invite someone that isn’t on your Discord friend list, you can copy the link and send it to them. Remember that you got a similar window showed when you first made this server? At that time, the generated link would’ve lasted for only 24 hours. But, if you skipped that or are trying to invite more friends to your Discord server now, the generated link would have an expiry date of a week.
Once your friends click on that link, they’ll be added to your server, and you’ll be able to communicate with them freely.
How to create channels in a Discord Server
Discord servers have this feature called channels. These channels are where you’ll be talking to your friends through text or voice. By default, these channels are of two categories that are text and voice. But, you can create even more channels under those tabs with different names to separate them and keep things organized.
If you haven’t made any channels yet, you’d still have at least one channel under each tab by the name of “general.”
You can create more channels by following the method shown below:
For the web and Desktop app, you can open your server, and you’ll find this “+” sign right next to either the “TEXT CHANNELS” or “VOICE CHANNELS.” For mobile app users, you’ll have to join your server and then tap on the “three horizontal lines” icon on the top-left corner of the screen, or just swipe right.
Give a name to your channel. Keep in mind that you can also make these channels private, so only you or those authorized by you can see this channel.
Once you’re done with giving your channel a name, you can further customize it by clicking on the gear icon next to the channel’s name. For mobile users, you’ll have to swipe right on your server and then tap and hold the channel’s name that you want to edit. Select the “Edit Channel” option to further customize your channel.
From the “Edit Channel” menu, you can manage a lot of stuff, as well as delete the channel entirely.
Suppose you want to create more categories for your channels on the Discord server. In that case, you’ll have to right-click on the empty space under your channels to select “Create category” or click on the icon next to your server’s name on the top-left corner of the screen.
If you’re on mobile, you can create categories by swiping right on your server and clicking the “3-dot” icon right next to your server’s name.
If you want to edit existing categories, you can right-click or tap and hold on the category name and select the “Edit Category” option.
How to Designate Roles in the Discord channel
Managing a big server with a lot of servers by yourself can be pretty difficult. This is why we have roles on Discord. These roles allow you to authorize specific members of the groups who can enforce the rules. You can further customize these roles to specify their authority.
Follow these step-by-step instructions below to create your own roles and decide what their permissions and powers will be in the server:
Go to the “Server Settings” by clicking the server’s name on the top right corner of the web or desktop app. You can find this option by swiping right on your server and clicking on the “3-dot icon” right next to your server’s name.
Select the “Roles” tab.
Click on the big blue “Create Role” button there. For mobile app users, you’ll have to tap the “+” icon on the bottom-right corner of the screen.
Select a name for this role, and assign a specific color to it. You’ll have to set up permissions for the new role; you can skip this or make changes to it in the future. Keep in mind that roles of higher authority will be displayed more prominently on the member list.
Now that you’ve created a role, you’ll have to select default permissions to make further changes to the role. Once you click on it, it will open a new menu. Here, you can select the role and assign their authority in the server.
Save your changes and close the tab.
Right-click or tap and hold a member’s username in your server and select the role to assign it to them.
How to Make a Public Discord Server
Making a Discord Server Public to ensure anyone can access it without a link takes some time. You’ll only be able to invite people to your server through a link in the beginning. Still, once you make your server public, anyone will be able to look it up. Check out the following step-by-step instructions to see how to make a Discord server public.
Open your server, and right-click on your server’s name to select “Server Settings.” You can also do it on mobile by swiping left on your server.
Scroll down and select the “Enable Community” option.
Select the “Get Started” button in the middle of the screen.
You’ll be shown the requirements of making your server public.
Once you’ve fulfilled the requirements, you can select the “Discovery” option in the “Community” tab.
Most likely, the “Enable Discovery” button would be disabled right now. That is because you’ll have to fulfill certain requirements to enable this option. Check out the “Community Server Guidelines” to determine what you’ll need to do to make your server discoverable.
Once you’ve fulfilled all the requirements, the “Enable Discovery” button will become active, and you’ll be able to select it to make your server discoverable.
